Dinner Party
They all took their appointed seat around the richly laden table
He mentally reviewed the cutlery, at least as far as he was able
Tried to rehearse some empty words fitting the occasion
Wondered how he’d ended up now at yet another glum reception.
The hors d’oeuvre quickly came and went as he tried to show some pity
For the dreary life of the washed up wife of a banker from the city
During first course, without remorse, she whispered in his ear,
Of loving arms and secret charms and a room not far from here.
The quality of love
Patterned in the sky
Falls down from above
Trickles from the stars
It’s kiss and tell and then fare you well but your heart is set on fire
Cos’ everyone desires
The quality of love
The ladies, sipping Chardonnay, chatted gossip and latest fashions
And he stared at the floor to try and ignore the men’s football
conversations
But when came desert she reasserted her feelings once again
This time the wine kicked in, so he tumbled in, and took her by the hand
The quality of love
Sparkles in her eyes
What she’s dreaming of
Is written in the skies
They say we strive for an independent life but that’s all a lot of lies
Cos’ everybody cries
For the quality of love
The quality of love
Glimmers in the night
Hearts break and dissolve
But hearts do never die
Tonight she looks a delight but will she take flight come the morning light?
Cos every wrong is right
In the quality of love
And everybody fights
For the quality of love
Sets the world alight
The quality of love.
